BUSINESS NEWS| Amazon launchs new bank in South Africa

Old Mutual Completes “All-In” Migration to AWS, Enhancing Financial Services Capabilities

Old Mutual, a leading financial group, has successfully concluded its comprehensive migration to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in a bid to bolster its processing capacity for cutting-edge financial services. The group has announced the closure of its on-premises data centers and the seamless transfer of its entire information technology (IT) infrastructure, including its banking, insurance, and wealth management systems, to AWS.

This migration marks a significant milestone in Old Mutual’s digital transformation journey. By utilizing AWS’ robust infrastructure, the company aims to reduce financial transaction processing time by two-thirds, minimize downtime by 50%, streamline the development of innovative insurance products, and foster business innovation through machine learning technologies.

AWS expressed its satisfaction with the completion of Old Mutual’s all-in migration, heralding it as the “next chapter of their digital transformation.” The move is expected to enhance performance, decrease processing times, streamline operations, simplify customer experiences, and drive cost efficiencies for the financial group. AWS also affirmed its commitment to continue collaborating with Old Mutual in delivering the next generation of financial products.

Notably, this transition holds particular significance as Old Mutual plans to launch its own fully-fledged bank in South Africa. Although the group already offers some transactional banking services through a third party, Bidvest Bank, it recognizes the immense potential in establishing its own banking capabilities, particularly in the profitable unsecured lending sector.

In November 2022, Old Mutual obtained approval from the South African Reserve Bank’s Prudential Authority to apply for a banking license, with intentions to launch its own bank in 2024. The group emphasized its commitment to leveraging state-of-the-art technology to enhance service and personalization for its accounts. Cloud-based technology, now actualized through the AWS migration, will play a pivotal role in achieving this vision.

The comprehensive migration to AWS encompassed the transfer of over 2,000 on-premises servers, 215 applications, 1,786 databases, and more than 500 websites. Old Mutual expects this move to expedite innovation, particularly in the face of global economic uncertainties, by significantly reducing the time required for new application testing from months to mere minutes.

With the migration successfully completed, the company is poised to leverage AWS capabilities to anticipate customer needs and develop the next generation of financial products and experiences.

Furthermore, Old Mutual plans to harness AWS ML (Machine Learning) and generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) services to generate real-time, personalized financial forecasting and recommendations for its customers. Examples of the benefits include the ability to anticipate changing savings needs as customers approach retirement, recommend insurance products based on changing income levels and life stages, and assist entrepreneurs in planning their investments as their businesses expand.

The migration to AWS is also expected to eliminate daily server outages, disconnected financial products, and the escalating costs associated with on-premises infrastructure.

Old Mutual’s successful migration to AWS signifies a significant leap forward in its digital transformation journey. The enhanced capabilities provided by AWS will empower the group to deliver exceptional financial services, drive innovation, and cater to evolving customer needs in an increasingly dynamic market landscape.
