DJ Shimza, an internationally acclaimed musician, is elated after Nhlamulo “Nota” Baloyi, a former artist manager, has finally paid him the damages for defaming him. Baloyi was found guilty of calling DJ Shimza a corrupt toy boy, and was ordered to pay the musician R200,000 in damages.

The road to the payment was not an easy one as Baloyi initially refused to pay the damages, but he later accepted defeat and promised to pay DJ Shimza, whose real name is Ashley Raphala. According to City Press, Baloyi paid the DJ in three instalments, with the balance due this month. Baloyi confirmed that he had paid Raphala R37,500 in two tranches and R50,000, with only R75,000 left to pay by the end of the month.

However, the legal battle is not yet over as Baloyi has instructed his lawyers to oppose Raphala’s legal team’s bill, which includes various charges such as a R528 charge for drawing summons, R1,312 for an hour of consultation, R2,071 for 19 calls made and received, R19,000 for the perusal of the trial bundle, and DJ Shimza’s Advocate EJJ Nel’s legal bill of R252,540. Baloyi expressed confusion over the amount billed, saying, “Why would fees billed at R289,000 end up being taxed at R349,000, when it should only be R200,000 after deductions?”

In 2021, DJ Shimza applied for a gag order against Baloyi after he claimed that he had made defamatory allegations against him on Twitter. Baloyi accused DJ Shimza of unduly benefiting from government tenders because of his romantic relationship with Athi Geleba, who works as the head of digital communications in the presidency.
