The murder trial of Senzo Meyiwa, who was a goalkeeper for the South African national soccer team Bafana Bafana, has resumed in the Pretoria High Court.
Meyiwa’s friend took the witness today and offered additional incriminating charges concerning the second defendant.
When Meyiwa came back to the stand on Monday, Tumelo Madlala, a friend of Meyiwa’s, was being questioned by the defense in a process known as cross-examination.
He stated that the individual identified as Accused Number 2 was one of the assassins who ended Meyiwa’s vibrant life in October of 2014.
Tumelo did a startling about-face after previously asserting, back in September during an identification parade, that he was unable to recognize any of the assailants.
At this moment, he has directed attention on the second accused.
In light of the fact that Madlala appears to have shifted his position about the identification of the offender, the attorney for the defense has raised serious concerns about the reliability of Madlala’s testimony.
He told her, “I’m going to put it to you that the only reason you were able to point out accusation number two in court was because you have been watching television and [following] the media.”
In answer, Madlala stated, “No, I vehemently reject that. I don’t consider myself to be the type of person that enjoys sitting around and watching television.
“Furthermore, I’d like to point out that the suspect I pointed to on that particular day [the day Meyiwa was killed] was wearing a jacket with a hoodie even if I can’t recall the color of the jacket,” the witness said. “I’d like to point out that the suspect I pointed to on that particular day was wearing a jacket with a hoodie.” I have a very distinct recollection of that.”
