Nelisiwe Sibiya, who plays the character of a sangoma and medical doctor on Durban Gen as Dr. Mbali Mthethwa, is mulling over whether or not she should become a sangoma in real life.

The actress disclosed during an interview with the Daily Sun about her ancestry that she has not yet made a decision regarding whether or not she should follow in the footsteps of her ancestors and become a sangoma.

The actress revealed that her own mother was raised in a sangoma household but later converted to Christianity after completing her training and becoming a sangoma.
She asserts that because her mother disregarded her ancestral calling, she is now the one who is forced to pay the price for it.

My mother decided to become a sangoma, so she went to school for it. She received her diploma, but she then gave it all up and became a Christian. “Right now, I’m experiencing the consequences,” Nelisiwe added.

Nelisiwe shared her thoughts regarding her current character role by stating that the plot of her story is quite close to her heart because it mirrors her own life in some ways.

“Because it brought to mind the world in which I find myself, this plot was really entertaining to me. Although it left me emotionally spent, mentally tired, and physically exhausted, I had a great time doing it. It has a profound effect on me on a personal level and enlightens me in a variety of ways, she said.

During this time, Nelisiwe left a mysterious message on her blog in which she made a passing reference to her ancestral calling.

Nelisiwe Sibiya, when speaking about her own ancestors, issued a warning that if her ancestors were capable of treating her harshly for not embracing her calling, then they would most likely treat her adversaries even more harshly.

“If my own Dlozi’s can nyisa me all these years for not embracing my calling, think what they can do to my enemies,” Nelisiwe said in her letter. “If they can nyisa me for not accepting my calling, imagine what they can do to my enemies.”
