Death saddens Robert Marawa

The news of professional lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi’s sudden death in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital has deeply saddened legendary broadcaster Robert Marawa. Buthelezi, 24, was admitted to the intensive care unit after sustaining brain damage during his match with Siphesihle Mtungwa in Ethekwini.

Despite knocking out his opponent, the referee stopped the fight as Buthelezi seemed disoriented. Unfortunately, despite receiving excellent medical care, he succumbed to the severity of his brain injury, according to a joint statement released by the Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa. Details about his funeral will be announced at a later time.

While many consider boxing a dangerous sport, advancements in medical science have helped mitigate the impact of even the most powerful blows. Although the idea of boxers wearing helmets for protection has not been seriously considered thus far, some people may contemplate its potential benefits.
