Corpse stolen from Limpopo grave

A recent discovery at a cemetery in Limpopo, South Africa, has left the local community in shock. A family member visiting the gravesite of a loved one in preparation for an upcoming unveiling of the tombstone made the shocking discovery that the grave had been dug open and the corpse stolen.

According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, a police spokesperson in the area, the alarm was raised on Sunday by the family member who had made the discovery. Upon arriving at the scene, the police found an open coffin with no corpse inside.

A preliminary investigation was immediately conducted, and it was established that the suspect(s) had entered the cemetery by cutting through the side fence and then dug a hole next to the grave to gain access to the coffin and steal the body.

The victim, Modike Phillemon Masedi, had died on January 15, 2022, and was buried seven days later. However, the motive behind the theft remains unknown at this stage.

In response to this disturbing event, Limpopo police commissioner, Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe, has expressed her shock and has ordered that the perpetrator(s) be brought to justice. She also issued a call for community members to respect the ongoing investigations being conducted by the police and to avoid pointing fingers, as this often leads to vigilantism.

Cases of violation of a grave and theft have been opened, and the police are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact Detective Commander W/O Nthai Modjadji on 060 996 0062 or 015 386 9940 or to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. The horrifying corpse heist evoked mixed sentiments on social media.
