The daughter of late South African hip hop star, AKA, Kairo Forbes, has spoken out for the first time since the death of her father on 10 February 2023. Kairo, who was born to AKA and DJ Zinhle during their romantic relationship, has been co-parented by the pair since their split.

In the days following AKA’s passing, Zinhle took to social media to share photos and videos of herself mourning the loss of her baby daddy. However, she also shared a video of Kairo, assuring fans that the young star was doing well. When asked how she was feeling, Kairo responded with a simple “pretty”.

During AKA’s memorial service at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, many industry peers, friends, and fans came together to celebrate the life of the iconic rapper.

Notable names in attendance included Oskido, JR, Da Les, Nandi Madida, Blxckie, Yanga Chief, Anatii, and Bianca Naidoo, partner to the late rapper Riky Rick. The service was MC’d by Nomuzi ‘Moozlie’ Mabena, with Kabelo Mabalane delivering the opening prayer.

Many speakers paid tribute to AKA, describing him as a “praying man” who had “given his life to Jesus”. Yanga Chief shared memories of his time with AKA, acknowledging that the late rapper was not perfect but had an unwavering commitment to music-making and performance.

Other tributes were shared from those in attendance, including Nandi Madida, who expressed her gratitude for AKA’s influence on her life and praised the rapper for changing so many lives. Robert Marawa shared his condolences for AKA’s family and girlfriend, whom he had recently met. JR expressed his grief and offered prayers for AKA’s family, while Oskido reminded Zinhle and her husband to take care of their two daughters.

Yanga Chief also spoke directly to Kairo, acknowledging the pain of losing a father and thanking her for helping AKA become a better person. He encouraged Kairo to remember the lessons her father had taught her and to carry on his legacy.

AKA’s memorial ended with a music celebration, with Anatii performing the final musical act. The late rapper’s family and fans danced along to his hits, including his Victory Lap song.
