5 AKA killers arrested in Durban while going to kill another person. On Thursday, March 17th, 2023, the South African police apprehended five heavily armed individuals who were allegedly on their way to kill a high-profile person in Cato Manor, Durban. According to Sipho Hlomuka, MEC for Community Safety in KwaZulu-Natal, the five were suspected of being hitmen involved in a number of cases.

Hlomuka claimed that the police obtained information about an intended “hit” and acted on it, successfully preventing what could have been another tragic incident.

The five suspects were apprehended in three vehicles, a silver bakkie, a rented Toyota Starlet, and a third car owned by one of the males. According to Hlomuka, the bakkie was allegedly taken at Inanda, and the accused planned to use it as one of their escape vehicles.

“I’m not going to mention the person’s name as we are still in the process of investigations, but he is a high-profile person in Durban,” Hlomuka said. “Police followed the cars and found many guns that I’m not going to mention by name,” he added, stating that they had arrested at least four people.

At the scene of the arrest, five males were tied next to a bakkie. Hlomuka stated that the reasons why the “high-profile person” was targeted were still unknown. “The police are going to do the work and process all the firearms found at the scene, and also we are going to investigate the phones that were found in the possession of the suspects,” he said. “Their phones are ringing as we speak, and whoever hired them to go and kill that person is calling to check how far they are.”

When asked if the suspects were connected to the recent hit on rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, Hlomuka stated that they were still looking into possible connections. He also stated that the investigation into AKA’s death was underway and that police would give details as soon as they become available.

This incident is another reminder of the ongoing problem of violence and crime in South Africa. The country has one of the highest crime rates in the world, and the government has been criticized for not doing enough to address the issue. However, this successful operation by the police is a glimmer of hope for the citizens of South Africa. It shows that the authorities are taking the problem seriously and are working to make the streets safer.

Gun violence is a particularly big issue in South Africa, with high rates of gun ownership and many illegal firearms on the streets. According to a report by the Small Arms Survey, South Africa has one of the highest firearm-related homicide rates in the world, with an estimated 13.3 firearm-related deaths per 100,000 people in 2019. This is significantly higher than the global average of 6.1 per 100,000 people.

In addition to gun violence, South Africa also has high rates of other types of crime, such as robbery, carjacking, and home invasion. The country also struggles with corruption and organized crime, which often go hand in hand with violent crime.

The South African government has implemented a number of initiatives to address the problem of crime. These include increasing police presence in high-crime areas, implementing stricter gun control laws, and improving community policing. However, these efforts have not been enough to make a significant impact on crime rates.

One of the biggest challenges facing the authorities is the issue of corruption within the police force. Many police officers are believed to be involved in criminal activities themselves, and there have been numerous cases of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

To address this issue, the government has launched a number of investigations into police corruption and has implemented measures to improve police training and accountability. However, progress has been slow, and many citizens remain distrustful of the police.

The issue of crime in South Africa is complex and multifaceted, and it will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders to make a significant impact. In addition to government initiatives, civil society organizations, businesses, and individuals must also play a role in addressing the problem.

One important step that can be taken is to improve education and job opportunities, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Poverty and lack of opportunities are often cited as underlying factors in criminal behavior, and addressing these issues could help to reduce crime rates.

Another important step is to address the issue of illegal firearms. Many of the guns used in violent crimes in South Africa are smuggled in from neighboring countries or stolen from legal owners. Stricter enforcement of gun control laws and more effective border control measures could help to reduce the number of illegal firearms on the streets.

Finally, there is a need for greater community involvement in crime prevention efforts. This could involve initiatives such as neighborhood watch programs, community policing, and youth mentoring programs.

The successful operation by the police to apprehend the five suspected hitmen is a positive development in the ongoing fight against crime in South Africa. However, it is just one step in a long journey towards making the country safer for all its citizens.

In conclusion, the issue of crime in South Africa is a serious and complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach. The government, civil society organizations, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play in addressing the issue. The successful operation by the police to prevent a potential hit on a high-profile individual is a glimmer of hope for the citizens of South Africa, and it should be seen as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to make the country safer.
